YOUNGSTOWN – On Wednesday August 23, 2023, at 3:30 PM, SOBE Concerned Citizens (SCC) will hold a rally for Solidarity Against SOBE outside the Commissioners Hearing Room, 21 West Boardman St. Ste. 200 around the corner from the Mahoning County Courthouse 120 Market St. in downtown Youngstown.
We will come together in unity at 3:30 pm before the 4 pm Finance Committee Meeting and the 5:30 pm Special Council Meeting to URGE our elected officials to PUBLICLY state their opposition to SOBE. As our representatives, we stand with them as a community to make sure that the OHEPA denies their Air Pollution Permit-to-Install and Operate.
At the August 10th OHEPA meeting, the audience of over 150 participants was overwhelmingly against the SOBE project which received an OHEPA DRAFT permit on July 6th. Questions and later official comments from residents raised concerns about the health and safety of our community, the fact that zoning in this area is Mixed Use Community, NOT Industrial, and the many Environmental Justice issues associated with locating this project in a disadvantaged community. Mayor Brown, Tom Hetrick (President of City Council), Anita Davis (6th Ward) and Mike Ray (4th Ward) also spoke in opposition.
On August 17th, SOBE Concerned Citizens held a lively public meeting at the Dorothy Day House where 35 people shared impressions and reactions to the August 10th OHEPA meeting. SOBE Concerned Citizens decided that we will rally in SOLIDARITY AGAINST SOBE with our electeds and begin taking action to notify SOBE that they are permitted to do steam heating and cooling only. They will not be permitted to expand into pyrolysis and gasification in our Mixed Use Community zone.

"SOBE Concerned Citizens will hold a rally to stop the proposed SOBE Energy Plant from moving into the city on Wednesday in Youngstown.[...] "The group is concerned about the health risks the plant could pose for the area if it's permitted to operate in the city.
"The facility would be located at the old Youngstown Thermal building on North Avenue and convert waste into energy but many living nearby say they aren't getting all of the answers from the company they need on if it's safe.
"In July, The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency announced it is seeking the public's opinion on the installation of a SOBE thermal energy plant in Youngstown.
"Comments are due at the end of the business day Sept. 10."
